The bolo\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e reflects Kestrel’s lifelong fascination with the wildlife of the American West and his distinctive ability to capture the character of an animal in sculptural form.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"isSelectedEnd\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eKestrel grew up in southern New Mexico, where his family raised and trained Quarter Horses and worked cattle. The high-desert landscape and its wildlife became a lasting influence on his work. Today, he lives and works in Colorado’s Redstone Canyon, where he describes the surrounding landscape and wildlife as something that has “always nurtured and inspired” him. His sculpture ranges from birds and other wildlife to reptiles, amphibians, and the animals of the Western landscape.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"isSelectedEnd\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe 2003 bolo holds a notable place in Kestrel’s long relationship with \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan\u003ePrix de West\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e. He exhibited in the invitational from 1998 through 2013 and received the Ann Noble Brown \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan\u003ePrix de West\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e Purchase Award in 2013 for \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan\u003eDesert Timeline\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e. The 2003 bolo was created during the middle of that distinguished association, when Kestrel was already established as a respected wildlife sculptor and member of both the National Sculpture Society and Society of Animal Artists.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe barn owl is a fitting subject for Kestrel, whose work consistently celebrates species that share the Western landscape with us.
