The 1993 Prix de West Collectors’ Bolo, Sundowner, was created by acclaimed Western artist and sculptor Hollis Randol Williford (1940–2007). Born in Texas and later based in Colorado, Williford worked in sculpture, painting, drawing and etching, developing a distinctive approach to Western subjects that emphasized character, movement and the essential qualities of his subjects. His work is held in the collections of institutions including the Denver Art Museum, Thomas Gilcrease Museum and here at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. Fellow artist Clarence Tillenius remembered Williford as someone who was "constantly seeking the essential ingredient, the thing that makes his sculpture live."
Williford had a particularly distinguished history with Prix de West. He received the Prix de West Purchase Award twice, first in 1980 for The Snake Priest and again in 1988 for Welcome Sundown. That second work holds a special place in the history of the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum: a bronze version is part of the Museum's collection, while a monumental twelve-foot version stands at the Museum's entrance. The Museum has described Williford as an artist who captured "the true sense of the American West," making his work especially fitting for an institution devoted to preserving and interpreting Western culture.
Created only five years after Williford's second Prix de West Purchase Award, the 1993 Sundowner bolo is significant on several levels. It represents the work of a two-time Prix de West Award winner, connects directly to one of the most recognizable sculptures at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, and belongs to a collectible tradition that brings fine Western art into everyday life. More than a commemorative piece, Sundowner is a small-scale example of Williford's contribution to the visual history of the American West and to the enduring legacy of Prix de West.
