The 2003 Prix de West Collectors’ Bolo was designed by acclaimed wildlife sculptor Steve Kestrel and features the head of a barn owl. The bolo reflects Kestrel’s lifelong fascination with the wildlife of the American West and his distinctive ability to capture the character of an animal in sculptural form.
Kestrel grew up in southern New Mexico, where his family raised and trained Quarter Horses and worked cattle. The high-desert landscape and its wildlife became a lasting influence on his work. Today, he lives and works in Colorado’s Redstone Canyon, where he describes the surrounding landscape and wildlife as something that has “always nurtured and inspired” him. His sculpture ranges from birds and other wildlife to reptiles, amphibians, and the animals of the Western landscape.
The 2003 bolo holds a notable place in Kestrel’s long relationship with Prix de West. He exhibited in the invitational from 1998 through 2013 and received the Ann Noble Brown Prix de West Purchase Award in 2013 for Desert Timeline. The 2003 bolo was created during the middle of that distinguished association, when Kestrel was already established as a respected wildlife sculptor and member of both the National Sculpture Society and Society of Animal Artists.
The barn owl is a fitting subject for Kestrel, whose work consistently celebrates species that share the Western landscape with us. Its compact, expressive form makes this bolo an especially appealing example of his wildlife sculpture, while its creation for Prix de West gives it a significant place in the history of the annual Collectors’ Bolo tradition. For collectors, it offers the opportunity to own a wearable bronze by an artist whose career has been closely connected to Prix de West and to the wildlife of the American West.
