The 2015 Prix de West Collectors’ Bolo features two bronze designs by renowned Western sculptor Herb Mignery: A Good Hand and Boss Lady. Together, the pieces showcase Mignery’s celebrated depictions of the working West. Raised on his family’s ranch near Bartlett, Nebraska, Mignery grew up immersed in ranch life and developed a firsthand understanding of the people, horses, and traditions that became the subjects of his art.

Mignery began casting bronze in 1973 and soon established himself as one of the leading sculptors of contemporary Western life. He has described his fascination with “the fluid movement of horse and rider,” while his figure sculptures often portray the everyday people who shaped the West—from cowboys and ranchers to settlers, teachers, and other “subtle characters of the old and contemporary West.”

Created specifically as the 2015 Prix de West commemorative bolo, A Good Hand and Boss Lady bring Mignery’s storytelling approach to a wearable Western collectible. The pairing makes this bolo particularly distinctive within the Prix de West series, offering two complementary expressions of Mignery’s enduring interest in the people, horses, and working traditions of the American West.

The Collectors' Bolo tradition began in 1986.
