As an 18-year veteran of Prix de West, Colorado-based sculptor Dan Ostermiller's works have many times been featured in the halls of the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum.
"It has been an honor to be a part of Prix de West the past 18 years," Ostermiller said, "and I was really glad to be chosen to do the bolo."
According to Ostermiller, when he was approached about producing the 2021 bolo, his first thoughts turned to the Great Plains toads that frequent the ponds around his studio in Colorado. This relatively large species of toad is ubiquitous throughout the North American Great Plains, from Canada down to Mexico, and thrives in diverse habitats including grasslands, agricultural areas, floodplains and deserts. In addition, he said, the shape of the Great Plains toad’s body lends itself well for use as a bolo.
Ostermiller also studied his collection of Prix de West bolo designs from years past, ensuring there were no previous frog or toad designs. Satisfied his vision for the 2021 bolo was unique, the next step was to produce the piece. “The creating side was very easy,” he said, “and the Museum handled the production. It took a few tries but we landed on a patina that I liked.”
The Collectors' Bolo tradition began in 1986.
