The Number 8 Turquoise Five Arrow & Step Window Sandcast Cuff by Gilbert Begay is a striking example of traditional Navajo craftsmanship blended with bold, contemporary form. Measuring 2 ¾" across and 2" wide with a 1 ⅜" opening, this heavy sterling silver cuff is sculpted using the ancient sand cast technique, in which molten silver is poured into a hand-carved sand mold. The result is a distinctive texture and weight that can only be achieved through this labor-intensive process, and each piece is inherently one of a kind.
At the heart of the cuff lies a vibrant Number 8 turquoise stone, celebrated for its rich sky-blue hue and golden-brown matrix. Mined from the famed Number 8 mine in Nevada, this turquoise is prized among collectors for its beauty and rarity, as the mine has long since closed. The stone sits within a bold stepped geometric frame, often referred to as a window or spirit gate motif, symbolizing perspective, protection, and passage between worlds. On each side, five directional arrows emphasize strength, focus, and unity, repeating a pattern long associated with guidance and defense.
Gilbert Begay’s work reflects a deep respect for both technique and tradition. The interplay of the textured silver, clean geometry, and the natural turquoise evokes balance between earth and spirit. This cuff stands not only as a powerful statement piece but also as a wearable expression of resilience, intention, and artistry.
