Tufa Cast Single Stone Cuff with Triangular Cutouts by Toney Mitchell

A striking example of Toney Mitchell’s contemporary approach to Navajo silverwork, this sterling silver cuff features a natural turquoise cabochon surrounded by a bold, repeating pattern of triangular cutouts. The contrast between the cuff’s heavily textured surface and its remarkably crisp geometric forms gives the piece an almost architectural, machine-made appearance—but its character comes from an entirely traditional process.

Mitchell uses tufa casting, a time-honored Navajo technique in which molten silver is poured into a mold carved by hand from soft volcanic tufa stone. The porous stone leaves the distinctive textured finish seen across the cuff, while each mold is generally destroyed after casting, making every piece unique. The exceptionally sharp triangular edges are particularly impressive: achieving such clean, precise geometry from a hand-carved tufa mold requires considerable skill and careful finishing.

Diné (Navajo) silversmith Toney Mitchell is known for combining traditional Navajo influences with contemporary geometric design. His work often incorporates bold forms and textured surfaces, creating jewelry that feels both distinctly Southwestern and strikingly modern. This cuff is hallmarked “M” and “Sterling,” accompanied by Mitchell’s distinctive sunburst/floral-style maker’s mark.

The turquoise displays a vivid blue-green color with warm golden-brown matrix and host rock, creating a particularly dramatic contrast against the oxidized silver.
