The Art of the Saltillo: Paintings by John Moyers 18th & 19th Century Saltillos Mexican Regalia
People have prized early Mexican weavings known as Saltillo Sarapes for more than two centuries. These expertly woven textiles make compelling imagery with their shades of natural reds, purples, yellows, greens and blues against contrasting eye-popping backgrounds.
To refer to these works of art as simply blankets is a disservice to the weavers who made them. By the mid eighteenth and throughout the nineteenth century, the Saltillo Sarape was a functional object, tight enough to repel water, but equally coveted for its artistry.
One doesn't have to stretch the imagination far to discern what Moyers has captured both in the literal sense and fine details that individualize each Sarape. One of the goals of this show is to allow the viewer to consider the possibility of connection and inspiration between classic Mexican blankets and modern art.
